The MELT SHOP operates a 415-ton Electric Arc Furnace (the largest in North America) which melts scrap steel. After reaching temperatures of 3,000+ degrees the refined molten steel is poured & cast into steel billets. These 36’ x 5 1/8” x 5 1/8” billets are then sent to the Rod Mill for further processing. The Melt Shop only operates on weekends - that is Friday, Saturday & Sunday, including days, nights & holidays.
Melt Shop employees start in Utility and have opportunities to move into Production jobs in the Furnace, Caster or Crane departments.  These move ups may happen in weeks or years depending on staffing needs.
Utility works 8 or 9 hour shifts, starting at 6am Thursday – Monday.
Production works weekly-alternating, 12-hour, swing-shifts of 5-5, 6-6 or 7-7 plus another 8 hour day averaging 42 hours per week. 
All Melt Shop employees are typically scheduled EVERY WEEKEND.

 

The ROD MILL re-heats billets to nearly 2,000 degrees and feeds them thru rolling machines at speeds of over 19,500 feet per minute (220 mph) to make rods of varying sizes.

One billet will make nearly 4 miles of rod. Rod is wound into coils and prepared for shipping to customers.

All rod is made according to customers’ standards. Processes and chemistries are varied to accommodate different needs.

Rod Mill employees start in Utility and have opportunities to move into Production jobs in other pay ranges.  These move ups may happen in weeks or or years depending on staffing needs.

The Rod Mill runs 24/7 – there are 4 crews that cover these shifts on rotating schedules, including days, nights, weekends & holidays. *
Rod Mill Utility & Production employees work 12-hour swing shifts, 6a-6p and 6p-6a.
Rod Utility & Production employees are typically scheduled works 4 days then has 4 days off.

MELT SHOP UTILITY 

Utility employees perform labor and housekeeping tasks that are vital to the operation of the Melt Shop processes and running of the mill.   

Specific duties include but are not limited to: 

 

 

  • Install, repair and remove  brick and refractory material on furnace, ladles, tundishes
  • Operate remote controlled cranes, pendant operated equipment and various heavy equipment/tractors
  • Hook/unhook loads from cranes
  • Unload trucks and rail cars
  • Maintain adequate supply of materials in proper locations
  • Pre-stage materials for various processes
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance 
  • Work in other areas of Sterling Steel as assigned  

 

Must be able to work 12-hour shifts, in extreme hot/cold tempratures, on nights, weekends and holiday. 

Qualified candidates will have manufacturing, construction or other related expereince.  Sterling Steel values a proven record of reliable attendnace, positive attitude with the willingness & ability to learn.
