Leggett & Platt, Incorporated is seeking a Rod Mill Manager for our Steel Operations at Sterling Steel Company, LLC in Sterling, Illinois.  The Rod Mill produces coiled steel rod used in our Wire Mills for a variety of wire products. You would be accountable for the management of the Rolling Mill, assuring the achievement of designated productivity, yield, cost, quality, safety goals, and the supervision and development of staff. 

 

What you will be doing:

  • Direct and manage staff: schedule, train, coach, vacation scheduling, monitor and assure performance goals are met. Administer discipline. Maintain positive employee relations.
  • Prepare and implement business plan (analyze and evaluate statistical data) and update as required. Review production schedules; modify as required.
  • Work closely with Maintenance to assure equipment is operational.
  • Manage department/area budget; monitor and control expenses. Oversee purchase of supplies.
  • Develop and implement short and long-term operation plans.
  • Work with Environmental Health and Safety team to implement policies and procedures and oversee training to assure compliance.
  • Assure all quality parameters are met; respond to and resolve customer issues/problems.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement; prioritize projects and assign staff. Follow-up and keep management advised of project status.
  • Assure compliance with all company policies.

What we’re looking for:

  • 5 – 10 years of management experience in a union environment in the steel industry.
  • 5 – 10 years of In-depth understanding/knowledge of steel product, process and rolling mill experience.
  • Business or mechanical/electrical knowledge, typically acquired through a B.S. degree.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical practices.
  • In-depth interpersonal skills: ability to relate to all types of people; demonstrated trust, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Basic general business know-how: budgeting, planning, purchasing, etc.
  • Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, data analysis and administration; email and internet.
  • Basic problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Written and oral communication skills, including strong listening skills.
  • Flexibility and resilience.
  • Knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of QS9000, TS16949 and ISO14001
  • Ability to work in stressful work environment with steel plant conditions: hazardous, dirty and subject to weather and temperature extremes.
