As a Health and Safety Manager you will have the opportunity to foster a robust and safety-focused culture throughout the company. This position will report to the Regional EHS Manager. Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by reducing or eliminating the frequency and severity of future claims to reduce the company’s total risk.  The team you will be working with is quirky and close knit, and values safety and new ideas

So, what will you be doing as a Health and Safety Manager?

  • Design and implement programs to enhance HS protocols at assigned Leggett & Platt, including behavioral safety and regulatory compliance programs, to help the company lower its total cost of risk and continuously improve performance.
  • Advise local plant leadership on improving HS practices, workplace safety, and the safety culture.
  • Coordinate with leadership, locally and across the business, on HS-related capital budget items, including helping to create a business case for their acquisition.
  • Develop ergonomic protocols for Leggett & Platt locations.
  • Develop and oversee HS training for employees.
  • Develop meeting agenda and conduct regular HS meetings with local managers, supervisors, and employees.
  • Oversee the incident/accident investigation process, including identifying the root cause and corrective action. Ensure that local managers, supervisors, and employees are adequately trained to conduct investigations and develop and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Record applicable information in our designated electronic systems.
  • Ensure Safety Alerts are prepared and promptly shared with all Leggett & Platt locations in the Domestic Bedding Group.
  • Establish a local safety self-audit program, train appropriate personnel to audit, and perform periodic reviews to ensure compliance.


  • Keep track of safety worker orders for the Branch and track completion, and communicate aging items to the appropriate leadership
  • Regularly review workers' compensation and other local claims to determine accident trends and root causes and develop accident prevention initiatives based on these analyses.
  • Interpret and answer OSHA, NFPA, and other regulatory compliance questions.
  • Be the internal "go-to" person for all questions related to HS and maintain the knowledge required to be a subject matter expert in HS management; this includes keeping abreast of changes in laws and regulations affecting Leggett & Platt operations.
  • Collaborate with the management, supervisors, and other operations personnel to identify, quantify, and analyze claims data and causal information so that future claims can be reduced, in terms of both frequency and severity, primarily through appropriate operational procedures, safeguards, and behavior, and through loss prevention initiatives.
  • Regularly participate in "open items" meetings with internal and external colleagues associated with the risk management and insurance program to ensure that performance deadlines are being achieved and that initiatives are moving forward as desired
  • Experience managing direct reports

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Degree in occupational safety, environmental science, risk/loss control, or similar degree required.
  • Minimum of six years of responsibility over occupational safety in manufacturing environments required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience directly managing others required.


Things we consider a plus

  • Heavy manufacturing, particularly in a steel mill a plus.
  • Facilitating and mitigating regulatory inspections a plus.
  • CSP, CIH, or similar professional designation is a plus.
  • Previous Union site experience is a plus.
