As a Health and Safety Manager you will have the opportunity to ensure compliance with Safety regulations; communicate Safety information to Management and Employees; collaborate with the Management and Union to eliminate or lessen safety concerns; create and maintain required safety reports/logs and supervise Safety Coordinator.

So, what will you be doing as a Health and Safety Manager?

  • Continually look for leading indicators of safety concerns, devise and implement improvements to avoid future incidents.
  • Coordinate and implement Corporate/Branch programs and initiatives
  • Perform audits of area zone and all other safety inspections
  • Develop safety training as needed
  • Revise safety programs as necessary
  • Provide training to Management or Employees when necessary
  • Present Safety statistics at Monthly Management Review meetings
  • Communication with and accept guidance from EHS contacts
  • Approve purchasing requisitions and monitor expenses to remain within budget
  • Investigate all work comp injuries
  • Complete required reporting of work comp injuries
  • Participate in Safety meetings
  • Supervise Safety Coordinator and provide back up when needed
  • Create and administer Safety training for new and current employees
  • Maintain PPE Inventory
  • Follow all related SJPs
  • Adhere to all Policies and Work Rules
  • Comply with all SSC Safety rules
  • Split time (approximately 50/50) between mill and office setting
  • Spend time in the plant to get to know people and processes
  • Mobility to move to any area of Rod Mill, Melt Shop, Admin Building, or SSC property
  • Safely walk up and down stairs or climb onto cranes or other areas of plant
  • Walking, standing and climbing in extreme temperatures
  • Able to put on required PPE for demonstration or as needed in various areas of the plant
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds unassisted
  • Sitting long periods of time in office setting
  • Dexterity to type on keyboard and use office equipment
  • All other duties as assigned

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety or similar field preferred
  • 5-10 yrs. experience in Safety in a manufacturing environment
  • Pervious supervisory experience
  • Familiarity of current OSHA regulations/standards & IL Worker’s Compensation laws
  • Effective verbal & written communication skills (English required)
  • Cooperative attitude and collaborative relationship building skills
  • Ability to multi-task and efficiently management time without direction
  • Organized & detail oriented
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel & Outlook, basic office machinery and cell phone
  • Ability to learn company-specific programs/websites
  • Know and follow Company Quality Policy & Mission Statement
  • Learn and commit to LP9000 & LP Continuous Improvement
  • Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any nonconformity related to product, process, and the system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process and the quality system.
  • Initiate, recommend or provide solutions through designated channels.
  • Verify the implementation of solutions.
  • Control further processing, delivery or installation of nonconforming product until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
