We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Product Sustainability Engineer (m/f/d) within our Global Engineering Excellence team to help support our Automotive business. As a Product Sustainability Engineer (m/f/d) you will have the opportunity to shape how sustainability is embedded into engineering at scale - moving beyond compliance to real product impact. You will act at the intersection of design, materials, and data, translating sustainability ambitions into practical engineering decisions across our global product portfolio. Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by enabling future-proof product designs, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations and OEM expectations, and supporting our transition towards more circular, low-carbon solutions across all product groups. You will be part of an international team that combines deep engineering expertise with a passion for continous improvement, innovation, and values pragmatic problem solving.

 

Additionally, you’ll:

  • Define and maintain standard sustainability guidelines and checklists for each product development phase and project type
  • Conduct sustainability reviews of new and existing products across development phases by assessing defined criteria and preparing inputs for engineering design and release decisions
  • Embed sustainability requirements in engineering processes (innovation, core product development, applications engineering) as well as PLM and other engineering tools, clearly defining sustainability deliverables in each phase (e.g. screening assessments, material selection validation)
  • Advise engineering teams on material and design considerations by assessing CO₂ footprint, environmental impact, recycled or bio-based content, regulatory and OEM compliance (e.g. REACH, restricted substances), and end of life aspects under established frameworks
  • Maintain and update sustainability related material database, documentation, and libraries to support informed and repeatable engineering decisions
  • Support the translation of OEM, customer, Corporate, and regulatory sustainability requirements into practical engineering guidance and escalate deviation or risks as required
  • Prepare and deploy sustainability trainings for engineering teams, support lessons learned and best practice sharing within the Engineering Excellence team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives based on feedback and evolving requirements

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor or Master's Degree in Engineering (Materials, Mechanical, Industrial, or equivalent)
  • 5 years of experience in engineering, preferably 2-3 years in the field of sustainability requirements in Automotive
  • Strong understanding of engineering design and materials
  • Working knowledge of sustainability metrics (CO₂ footprint, circularity, compliance)
  • Analytical, structured, and detail-oriented way of working
  • Strong cross-functional communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to translate standards into practical, engineer-friendly guidelines
  • Affinity with PLM systems, data, and engineering tools
