Leggett & Platt, Incorporated is seeking a Production Supervisor for its Merit Steel location in Kouts, Indiana.  This role is responsible for Supervising the daily operations in: Wire Drawing, Cleaning House, Rod yard, Die Shop, Labors, Material Handlers, Shipping, Water Treatment, and Test lab during the shift.  This position will be for our midnight shift and report to the Operations Manager.

 

So, what will you be doing as a Production Supervisor?

 

  • Communicate any pertinent information with department personnel at the beginning of each shift. Review daily production schedule.
  • Ensure the flow of material(s) between departments is consistent with minimal disruption of departmental processes.
  • Ensure machine operators are following the production schedule provided by the scheduler. Communicate schedule changes to all affected departments/personnel, as they arise.
  • Schedule cleaning activities in the cleaning department for production, as needed. This includes ensuring the appropriate number of tubs are utilized, as business requires.
  • Coordinate the staffing of jobs in the event of employee absence(s) by utilizing the Employee Training Matrix to determine the personnel who are trained to perform the vacated position. 
  • Perform daily quality checks in wire drawing.
  • Ensure work instructions are being followed.
  • Oversee new hire training to ensure personnel have been properly trained in their required responsibilities.
  • Perform employee evaluations with new hires and other personnel as required.
  • Conduct employee disciplinary action(s) when needed. Communicate feedback to Operations Manager and HR.
  • Communicate to maintenance any machinery or equipment breakdowns.  Troubleshoot mechanical breakdowns if possible.
  • Attend scheduled safety meetings and required OSHA training, participate in safety investigations when necessary.
  • Active participant in first aid responding, be the point of contact with Safety Director.
  • Work closely with Safety Director to assure all personnel have received proper safety training.
  • Notify Safety Director of any unsafe working conditions.
  • Ensure good housekeeping standards are always maintained.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of all plant and safety rules as outlined in Employee Handbook.
  • Will be required to work all overtime when required up to and including monthly and quarterly inventory when scheduled.
  • Perform any tasks the Plant Superintendent and Plant Manager may require.
  • Participate in monthly Eco and Safety Committee Team meetings.

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and measurement conversions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate information from work instructions, production documents, labels, safety procedures, company policies, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), memos, and other company communications. 
  • Working knowledge of basic hand tools and their safe and proper use.
  • Ability to safely operate or oversee the operation of powered industrial trucks (e.g., forklifts), with preferred certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Proficient in using computer systems and manufacturing software, including the ability to navigate in-house programs, enter and retrieve data, and respond to email correspondence. 
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, analyze production-related issues, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and develop employees while promoting a safe, productive, and positive work environment.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to frequently bend, stoop, twist, reach, and perform other movements necessary to observe operations, inspect work areas, and support production activities.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods as required to perform job duties.
  • Must be able to walk throughout the production facility for the majority of the work shift.
  • Must be able to move throughout the facility, including navigating production areas, warehouses, and office spaces.

 

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to dust, noise, moving mechanical equipment, and powered industrial truck traffic.
  • May be exposed to varying temperatures, including hot and cold conditions, depending on the season and work area.
  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as designated for assigned work areas.
