We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a(n) Purchasing Supervisor within our Materials team to help support our Work Furniture business in Grand Rapids, MI.  In our Work Furniture Components business, we design, manufacture, and distribute a wide range of components and finished products that enhance comfort, motion, and style in the work and home furniture industry.  From surface-critical bent tube assemblies and molded plywood components to chair mechanisms, bases, arms, seats, and backs, our Work Furniture Components business brings diverse world-class manufacturing capabilities together in the production and assembly of high-quality products.  If you join our team, your work will ensure people across the world have a little more comfort in their lives.


As a(n) Purchasing Supervisor you will be responsible to carry out strategic purchasing activities and decisions.  Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by establishing a strong supply chain in a highly customized manufacturing environment.  You will also have the opportunity to serve as a mentor/coach to help develop skills, accelerate learning, and implement process improvements within the purchasing team.


So, what will you be doing as a(n) Purchasing Supervisor?

  • Oversee and manage the commodity buyers and the purchasing analyst. Train new hires and create onboarding plans
  • Use thorough forecasting and proper planning techniques to ensure that optimal inventory levels of items are maintained to meet standard requirements and/or evaluate the materials involved in capacity increase requests.
  • Participate in the weekly Materials Review Board with upper management to create and meet new project goals.
  • Manage inventory levels and maintain a more consistent flow of materials with the use of strategic purchasing techniques.
  • Optimize inventory turn overs and total inventory holding.
  • Lead purchasing team meetings to keep open communication within the group.
  • Monitor and maintain the Purchase Price Variance (PPV) log.
  • Develop and define a Purchasing Job Matrix.


To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, a related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in Supply Chain Management, or related work environment.
  •  2+ years of experience as a buyer is preferred.
  • Must possess solid communication skills, ability to negotiate, ability to multi-task, and solid problem-solving skills.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams.
  • Highly analytical with an ability to analyze complex data as part of the decision-making process. Able to use data to support decisions.
  • Must have significant computer experience using Windows, Word, Excel (advanced skills preferred), and ERP Information Systems
  • Demonstrated project management skills and process mindset.
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to manage communications.
  • Functional understanding of BOM’s, MRP, and Process Improvement practices and standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of purchasing concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Effectively manage the delivery of purchased products, components, and services in a manufacturing environment.
