We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for an Operations Engineer at our Genesis location in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position helps support our Work Furniture business.  In our Work Furniture Components business, we design, manufacture, and distribute a wide range of components and finished products that enhance comfort, motion, and style in the work and home furniture industry.  From surface-critical bent tube assemblies and molded plywood components to chair mechanisms, bases, arms, seats, and backs, our Work Furniture Components business brings diverse world-class manufacturing capabilities together in the production and assembly of high-quality products.  If you join our team, your work will ensure people across the world have a little more comfort in their lives.


As an Operations Engineer, you will have the opportunity to assess, create an action plan and implement projects to eliminate waste on the plant floor. The team you will be working with is creative and forward-thinking, and values individuals and diversity


So, what will you be doing as an Operations Engineer?

  • Responsible for leading the continuous improvement initiatives designed to eliminate non-value-added activities
  • Improving operations excellence at the branch with an emphasis on shop floor layout, standardized process and work, and labor efficiency improvement
  • Drive process improvement initiatives across the facility and help to identify future opportunity
  • Create CI scorecard for discipline, decision making, and reporting
  • Utilize problem-solving tools to identify and eliminate waste (i.e. value stream mapping)
  • Create standardized processes, standardized work, and training materials
  • Provide operational support to drive improvement efforts where needed
  • Create and implement shop floor improvement strategy and execute actions to improve branch KPI metrics
  • Identify, evaluate and recommend the capital equipment, tooling and fixtures required to improve the manufacturing process and write the necessary justification for approval of funds to implement the project
  • Success in this role will show in labor efficiencies, effective implementations, and improved downtime
  • Other duties as assigned


To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • ­­­BS in engineering or equivalent
  • At least 5 years’ experience as an engineer in a manufacturing setting
  • Progressive experience in manufacturing analysis and optimization
  • Experience managing and driving projects
  • Exception analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills and use of tools
  • Superb collaboration and communication abilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong MS office skills – Word, Excel, PP
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and product information books.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


Things we consider a plus:

  • Experience with project management software


Work Environment:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
