Job Summary: The Switcher Driver drives a tractor-trailer on company property backing in trailers to the correct loading dock. This driver never drives on public roads. 

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Education & Experience:

Must be at least 22 years of age to perform this job. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Standards for Commercial Vehicle Driver Qualifications:

 

  • Must be at least 22 years old with a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Have at least one (1) year verifiable Over-the-Road experience
  • Pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screen
  • Meet all DOT and Company requirements

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Checks schedule and receives assignment from supervisor.
  • Drives switcher tractor in a safe manner.
  • Locates trailer by trailer number and property attaches (air brakes, etc) to the switcher tractor
  • Backs trailers into dock or unloading area as instructed by lead person or supervisor.
  • Gets out of the tractor and opens or closes the trailer doors.
  •  May put seals on trailer door after closing
  •  Uses a two-way radio to communicate with others concerning moving trailers. 
  • Check oil, fuel, tires, batteries, etc. on vehicle and report any defects to supervisor 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Follow verbal instructions and use simple math.

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend information, reports instructions, correspondence and memos. 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed or oral instructions.
  • Attendance/Punctuality - Is consistently at work and on time.
  • Quality - Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Quantity - Meets productivity standards; Completes work in timely manner; Strives to increase productivity.
  • Safety - Observes all safety procedures and policies; Reports potentially unsafe conditions to supervisor; Uses equipment and materials properly.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Able to work accurately from verbal and written instructions.
