Sustainability Intern

Date: Apr 10, 2024

Location: Carthage, MO, US

Company: Leggett & Platt

We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Sustainability Intern within our Sustainability team to help support our business.  As a global-diversified manufacturing company, it’s sometimes hard to explain all the different things we do.  We like to say, “we’re the biggest company no one has ever heard of.”  We are confident you interact with one of our products in your daily life without knowing it.  Whether it’s the mattress you sleep on, the car you drive, the plane you fly on, or the furniture you sit on, our high-quality components are there supporting you.  If you join our team, your work will ensure people across the world have a little more comfort in their lives.

As a Sustainability Intern you will have the opportunity to support the development, implementation, and improvement of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)/sustainability policies, programs, and projects across the company.  Your contributions will have a direct impact on the company by supporting our goals to reduce our impact on the natural environment and support sustainable business practices. This position will report to the Sustainability Program Manager, but you will work collaboratively with multiple departments, teams, and leadership. Candidates must be able to commit to work up to 25 hours per week during the school year, with the possibility of additional hours during the summer months, depending upon experience and need.  If you are passionate about corporate sustainability and want to leave a lasting impact on a global organization, we would like you to join our team!

So, what will you be doing as a Sustainability Intern?

  • Collect, compile and review data from multiple business units on a variety of sustainability topics such as energy, water, and waste usage.
  • Provide support to our global network of manufacturing locations to share best practices with environmental stewardship, align strategies for facility reduction efforts of energy, water, and waste, calculate waste diversion metrics, and other related projects to drive consistent and repeatable improvements at our facilities.
  • Develop and maintain a Sustainability Handbook that can be used globally to further promote and enhance our ESG efforts.
  • Assist with various ESG reporting processes, striving for compliance with passed and pending regulations within this space.
  • Support alignment to global sustainability and ESG frameworks including GRI, SASB, TCFD, and UN SDG’s.
  • Engage in a variety of sustainably focused projects to further strengthen and mature our processes.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • On track to graduate with a 4-year or graduate degree, preferably in Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Energy Management, Environmental Engineering, or related fields
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a collaborative team
  • Great analytical skills
  • Great communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent time management skills
