As a Senior Manager you will have the opportunity to lead our driver safety program, maintaining full adherence to DOT/FMCSA regulations.  Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by building a high-performing driver recruiting and retention pipeline. This role combines regulatory expertise with operational leadership, owning safety performance, compliance audits, recruiting strategy, and driver experience from first contact through onboarding and ongoing development.

So, what will you be doing as a Senior Manager – Driver Safety, DOT Compliance & Driver Recruiting?

 

  1. Driver Safety
    • Own the company-wide Driver Safety Program: policies, SOPs, training, audits, and corrective actions. 
    • Monitor and improve CSA scores across BASICs; lead root-cause analyses of violations/incidents. 
    • Lead incident/accident investigations, determine preventability, and implement remedial training. 
    • Manage ongoing safety training: HOS, defensive driving, load securement, distracted driving, winter driving, etc. 
    • Smith System certified trainer
    • Coordinate with Insurance & Claims on losses, subrogation, and cost containment strategies. 

 

  1. DOT/FMCSA Compliance 
    • Ensure compliance with HOS, ELD, driver qualification files (DQFs), MVR checks, Drug & Alcohol (Part 40), Clearinghouse, medical certifications, and Vehicle Maintenance (Part 396). 
    • Oversee pre-trip/post-trip inspections and maintenance documentation; collaborate with Fleet/Shop. 
    • Oversee internal and external audits (FMCSA, state, customer) and CAPs (Corrective Action Plans). 
    • Maintain policies for hazmat (if applicable), load securement, and oversize/overweight permitting. 
    • Maintain accurate records and reporting: Accident Register, training logs, and compliance dashboards. 

 

  1. Driver Recruiting & Retention 
    • Build and execute a data-driven recruiting strategy for CDL-A company drivers.
    • Oversee end-to-end recruiting funnel: sourcing, screening, PSP/MVR review, offers, pre-employment testing, and onboarding. 
    • Optimize channels (referrals, job boards, social, local CDL schools, veteran programs) with measurable ROI. 
    • Partner with Operations on driver pay, home time, equipment, and job ads. 
    • Develop and track driver retention programs: mentorship, recognition, stay interviews, and feedback loops. 

 

  1. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration 
    • Lead teams (Driver Safety, DOT Compliance & Driver Recruiting); set goals, coach, and develop talent. 
    • Collaborate with Dispatch, Fleet Maintenance, HR, Legal, and Finance to align safety, compliance, and hiring goals. 
    • Build executive-ready dashboards and reports with trend analysis and corrective action status. 

 

  1. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements 
    • Travel to Domestic Branches, customer sites, and training events (~30%). 
    • Ability to observe vehicle inspections, driver safety practices, and ride-a-longs. 
    • Involvement with Corporate EHS team.

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • 7–10 years in transportation safety/compliance and driver recruiting; 3–5 years in leadership. 
  • Strong working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT regulations (Parts 382, 383, 385, 386, 387, 390–399). 
  • Experience with ELD/HOS platforms and safety/compliance systems (DQF, Clearinghouse, MVR, PSP). 
  • Proven track record improving CSA scores, audit outcomes, and reducing incident rates. 
  • Demonstrated success building scalable recruiting pipelines and reducing cost per hire and time-to-fill. 
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to influence across operations and executive stakeholders. 

 

Things we consider a plus:

  • Experience in dry van & flatbed fleets, multi-state operations, and customer audits. 
  • Familiarity with hazmat and oversize/overweight.
  • Certifications: CDS (Certified Director of Safety), CSP, NSC, or equivalent. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Supply Chain, Safety Management, or related field.
