The US Spring department of Leggett & Platt Inc. is searching for a Product Design Intern with a focus in Mechanical Engineering. This role will help support the IDEA Center, our Research & Development facility located in Carthage, Missouri.
As a Product Design Intern, you will be exposed to challenging projects while collaborating and creatively working within a dynamic team environment.
We’re looking for someone with “Brain Power”! Yes, the brain you have been working and challenging every semester of college. The brain that is gnawing at you to pursue something big. Well, let your brain chew on this: You could become a part of the engineering process behind some of the world’s most useful products. Sound appealing?
We will focus on providing Internship activities that can run the gamut of a product lifecycle: exploration, design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. You will work with engineering mentors based on your ability, skills, and interests. Our interns are expected to roll up their sleeves and jump in from day one — some have even been included on patents.
So, what will you be doing as a Product Design Intern?
- Defining detailed product specifications and functionalities based on user needs and business goals. Creating initial sketches, 3D models, and design concepts for the product.
- Developing physical prototypes to test design concepts and validate functionality.
- Conducting performance tests on prototypes to identify flaws and areas for improvement.
- Collaborating with production teams to determine the most efficient manufacturing methods.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need:
- Major in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Experience in 3D modeling, including SolidWorks, Inventor, Pro/E, etc.
- Have strong mechanical aptitude
Things we consider a plus:
- 40 credit hours or more towards bachelor’s degree preferred
- Student design project experience a plus
