Mechanical Engineering Intern

We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Intern within our Product Development team to help support our Adjustable Bed Division.  Did you know we have been revolutionizing the sleep industry since 1883?  That’s right!  In fact, we hold the original patent on a spiral steel coil bed spring, filed way back in 1885.  Since then, we have been an industry leader in guaranteeing you get the best sleep possible.  If you join our team, your work will ensure people across the world have a little more comfort in their lives.


As a Mechanical Engineering Intern you will have the opportunity to engage with many functional areas of the business unit, including sales, manufacturing, supply chain, and customer support.  This position is located at the IDEA Center in Carthage, MO.

So, what will you be doing as a Mechanical Engineering Intern?

  • Develop innovative electromechanical systems for the motion furniture industry
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams and ensure deliverables are executed on time to meet project schedule milestones
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop solutions to meet cost, quality, and manufacturability requirements
  • Perform various analyses on part and system designs including kinematic analysis, tolerance stack-up, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Support test laboratory verification and certification of products
  • Optimize designs for cost and reliability using analytical tools and Design of Experiments concepts
  • Support component and assembly level testing to validate that product designs meets all critical success factors
  • Present proposals and results to project teams and department leadership


To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Completed 60 credit hours in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software tools, preferably SolidWorks and Product Data Management (PDM) software tools, preferably SolidWorks PDM Pro.
  • Problem-solving and time management skills
  • Presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
